Digital Signage Player Case Study – Outdoor Promotions
Digital Signage Player Case Study – Outdoor Promotions
With Paris to the left, New York to the right, and the Great Pyramids of Egypt just around the corner, capturing the attention of someone on the Las Vegas strip can be quite a challenge. Outdoor Promotions stepped up to that challenge, and for the past two years has been dazzling tourists with their digital bus shelters, the only digital video network on the Las Vegas Strip. In now over 15 locations along the Strip, the Outdoor Promotions bus shelters provide a shady break from the intense Las Vegas sun and, with the help of MediaVue, capture the attention of everyone with their dynamic advertising content.
The Challenge:
Since the bus shelters are located right on the Strip, the hardware used needed to be able to stand-up to very harsh conditions, including extreme temperatures, dirt, dust and rain, even snow. It can get as cold as 20°F (-7°C) and as hot as 120°F (49°C) with surface temperatures on the street reaching 140°F (60°C). Another major consideration was power use. Using a high power PC or running a cooling unit in the bus shelters would increase power consumption and directly increase operating costs.
The Solution:
At first, Outdoor Promotions deployed shelters that included air conditioned equipment cabinets but these were costly to operate. They next tried a military grade fanless unit to drive their content but the unit cost was very high. Finally, through the recommendation of eLiquid, a digital signage software company and MediaVue partner, Outdoor Promotions settled on MediaVue’s SureVue 3A. The SureVue 3A’s small form factor made for an easy install in the bus shelter, and drove the displays using only 1/3 the power of the original solution, all while standing up to the Las Vegas heat. “It’s simple, does its job, and does not take up much space” says Randy Baker, Operations Manager at Outdoor Promotions. Included in each installation are temperature sensors, relays, power conditioners, converters, and a programmable power strip, all managed remotely in part of a system that alerts Randy of any failures.
Since deploying SureVues two years ago there has not been a single failure in any of the 15 locations. Like the action on the Strip, the screens in the Outdoor Promotions bus shelters operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “The hardware is excellent.” Randy says, “It tolerates the extreme environment and does not skip a beat. We have not had any problems.”
